Contract Signs For Purchase of Two Million KW Power From Iran

Kabul (BNA) The Ministry of Energy and Water has signed a contract for purchase of two million KW of power annually from Iran. 
According to the ministry of energy and water the government of Afghanistan has asked for 700 million KW of power annually. 
The contract was signed by Mohammad Ismael Minister of Water and Energy of Afghanistan and Minister of Energy of Iran Majid Namju while Iranian ambassador was present at the ceremony.
Mohammad Ismael said that the Islamic Republic of Iran will provides each KW of power at three cents or one and half Afs to Afghanistan and of this residents of Farah will benefit.  The contract duration is till 2015.
He added that Afghanistan demands 700 million KW of power from Iran and presently from 50 to 60 Megawatt of power is needed for Farah province and on the basis of this contract the imported power from Iran will be 10 million KW power in 24 Mega Watt to be used for Farah province while the power in Herat from current 90 Megawatts will be increased to 140 Mega Watts so that relative shortage of power therein is resolved. 
He added that Tajikistan and Turkmenistan is also exporting power to Afghanistan at the same price, while Uzbekistan is increasing the prices every year and presently one KW of power is sold by Uzbekistan at 7 cents.
According to the minister of energy and water, we need around 3,000 megawatts of power that cannot be obtained from the water resources of the country.
He stressed that construction of the large dams on the Kokcha and Kunar is taking around 10 to 15 years and they need at least three to five billion US dollars.
He noted that import of power from the neighboring countries is far cheaper.
Mohammad Ismael and Namju in the press conference rejected the interferences of the neighboring countries in building of Salma and Kunar dams saying that the main problem is shortage of resources.
