Kabul (BNA) The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Dr. Zalmai Rassoul, received the leader of the UK Labor Party, Mr. Ed Milliband, this morning at the Foreign Ministry.
Dr. Rassoul expressed the gratitude of the Afghan government and people for the United Kingdom’s contributions to Afghanistan over the past decade, particularly in Helmand province.
“We have achieved a tremendous amount in Afghanistan over the past decade in the political, social and economic life of our citizens,” said Dr. Rassoul. “Britain’s role in these shared achievements has been particularly significant.”
Dr. Rassoul also briefed Mr. Milliband and his accompanying delegation on the importance Afghanistan attaches to promoting confidence and cooperation in the Heart of Asia region. He also underlined the importance of Afghanistan’s long-term strategic partnerships with its international allies, including the United Kingdom, in sustaining the trust and confidence of the Afghan people in the future.
Dr. Rassoul also said the overwhelming approval of the Afghan-US long-term strategic partnership by the Wolesi Jirga today “showed the unanimity of Afghans of all walks in preserving the progress of the past decade and maintaining our close cooperation with the world in the interest of peace, stability and prosperity in Afghanistan and the wider region.”
Mr. Milliband said his party would continue to encourage the UK government’s cooperation with Afghanistan. Mr. Milliband’s delegation included the British ambassador in Kabul, Sir Richard Stagg, and senior members of the Labor Party.
