“We Should Have The Best Election System,” President Ghani

Kabul (BNA) Following a sequence of preparatory meetings on elections, a meeting was convened the other day in the Presidential Palace in which IEC officials and donors were also present, ,the president press office said in a statement.
According to the statement, other than the President, Second Vice-President, Mohammad Sarwar Danish and Chief Executive, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah also attended the meeting. The discussion was focused on use of technology.
Chairman and CEO of the IEC briefed the participants about assessment of use of technology in the elections. They said that they evaluated the strengths and weaknesses of use of technology in elections, resultantly rendering use of technology a necessity, the statement further said.
In the meeting, Minister of Finance Eklil Hakimi provided information on his meetings with representatives of the donors, the statement added.
In turn, Second Vice-President Mohammad Sarwar Danish and Dr. Abdullah Abdullah aired their views on merits of use of technology in the elections.  Representatives of donors voiced their opinions, saying that the election process is an Afghan-led process and that they support the Afghan Government in holding elections.
The President said, “We have a firm will to hold the elections and the legitimacy of elections is very significant for us, thus elections should be held transparently and interference is in no way tolerable in this democratic process.”
The President, calling it priority of the Government to hold elections, said, “In 2002, we proposed use of technology in the election process but, on account of some reason we did not use technology. Today, we are committed to using technology in this democratic process to ensure transparency.”
The President concluded that considering past experiences; we should have the best system for holding elections, the statement continued.
