Kabul (BNA) President Ghani hosted the opening ceremony of Journalists Support Fund Tuesday at Arg, an initiative aimed at helping bereaved families of journalists and reporters in need, by pledging AFN5 from his private account and AFN10 million from government budget to it.
Based on information of presidential statement to BNA, the president laid that both government and media are accountable to the nation, therefore the government will proceed in partnership with media, not in confrontation with it. The president also said that Constitution is the cornerstone of Afghanistan, and it dictates freedom of speech and the press. The government is committed to protect freedom of speech from any kind of deterrence. He also instructed all government authorities to comply by the Access to Information Law, or else face consequences.
Continuing on, the president said at this age when flow of information is excessive, media should do its due diligence to avoid spreading false information. He also called on media organization owners to do their best to protect the rights of journalists, by adopting insurance policies.
This Fund is going to be administered by an independent, eleven-member committee: ten members from journalist/reporters’ organizations and one representative from Ministry of Information and Culture. People from within and out of Afghanistan could donate to the Fund for supporting journalists in Afghanistan.
The president asked Minister of Finance to allocate a certain amount to the Fund annually based on available resources.
