Public Support Essential to Curb COVID-19: President Ghani Tells Herat Officials

Kabul (BNA) President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani held a video conference with officials of western Herat province late on Sunday evening, a statement from the presidential press office said yesterday.
At the outset, Herat Governor Abdul Qayyum Rahimi said measures had been taken to quarantine the provincial capital, where the number of coronavirus cases has fallen over the past few days.
He said an 800-bed hospital for the COVID-19 patients had been established and 125 doctors and nurses recruited in the province. No patient would travel Kabul from Herat, he said, adding they had 22,000 tons of food in provincial stocks, the statement added.
Speaking at the summit, First Vice President, Amrullah Saleh spoke and was pleased that the death toll had not been reported so far, and said he was pleased with the steps taken to fight the Corona virus in Herat, according to the statement.
"The first cabinet meeting was held and its main agenda was to fight the Corona virus, and serious action was taken on this issue," the first vice president said, as quoted in the statement, asking the officials to follow the steps taken by Waheed Omar, the senior adviser to the president and head of the State Committee for Public awareness on prevention and spread of the COVID-19, as according to him, key and professional measures has been taken so far.
Meanwhile, the Second Vice-President Sarwar Danish endorsed the governor’s view on quarantining Herat City. He said quarantine were two types -- voluntary and compulsory. VP Danish believed quarantining a city could play an effective role in preventing the spread of the coronavirus.
According to the statement, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has stressed the need for public cooperation with the government on preventing the spread of coronavirus. President Ghani thanked the Herat administration and people for fighting the deadly virus and urged the authorities concerned to continue their struggle.
