President Ghani Holds Virtual Meeting with Central, Southern, South-Eastern Zones Provincial Governors

Kabul (BNA) President Ashraf Ghani discussed measures and challenges particularly on fighting covid-19 spread with governors of central, southern and south-eastern provinces via videoconference today.
In this virtual meeting, the governors briefed on precautionary measures in their provinces such as formation of committees at the central and district level; imposing restriction of movements to prevent density and ensure social distancing; improving coordination among government agencies, private sector, civil society and rural councils; controlling prices of essential items; and disinfecting areas.
They stressed they have enhanced public awareness on preventing the spread of coronavirus in coordination with Ulama and tribal elders, calling for speedy procurement of medical equipment.
President Ghani described governors as representatives of the government in provinces and said the governors’ success leads to government’s success.
The president said allotments of 30, 60 and 100 million Afghanis will be transferred to provinces to be used for coping with the corona pandemic, where 30 million Afghanis will be allocated to each Paktika, Logar, Uruzgan, Bamiyan and Daikundi; 60 million Afghanis to each Ghazni, Khost and Paktia; and 100 million Afghanis to Kandahar.
He instructed his chief advisor, Dr. Fazel Fazly to take necessary measures to address the requirements in provinces mainly lack of ambulances and hospital beds.
The president asked the governors to provide a realistic estimation of natural disaster losses caused during the past ten years to enable the government adopt precautionary measures and said, short-term and medium-term measures should be applied to resolve needs for foodstuff.
First Vice-President Amrullah Saleh said the government has undertaken the leadership and management role on fighting the spread of coronavirus in line with the government’s covid-19 policy and based on the fundamental principles of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan.
He asked the governors to ramp up efforts to reach out to every corner of their provinces to mobilize people for contacting the pandemic. He echoed president Ghani’s instruction for presenting estimations on the natural disaster losses of the past decade to help the government adopt preventive measures.
