President Ghani Stresses Robust Regional Consensus for Peace in Afghanistan

Kabul (BNA) President Ashraf Ghani in a meeting with Lia Jian, the Chinese Special Envoy for Afghanistan discussed a range of issue including peace process and its recent developments, regional connectivity and efforts to expand regional trade cooperation on Tuesday.
According to BNA report, Mr. Jian expressed support for inclusive peace process with the Afghan government owning and leading it and said President Ghani’s leadership and efforts created an environment for peace that could set the stage for start of direct peace negotiations between the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and the Taliban group.
Lia Jian expressed China’s support for the Afghan government and president’s peace agenda and underlined that the Afghan peace process has reached a critical stage, calling on the relevant stakeholders to seize this opportunity for peace.
Having lauded the president’s vision on strengthening regional cooperation, the Chinese envoy for Afghanistan said his country is keen to further consolidate mutual ties and cooperation with Afghanistan.
President Ghani said Afghanistan-China ties are friendly and grounded on common interests and expressed hope that China’s vision on Afghanistan be centered on regional stability, economic cooperation and expansion of trade relations.
The president stressed that Afghanistan is willing to expand its economic relations with all countries in the region particularly China as an immediate neighbor of Afghanistan.
President Ghani referred to China’s role in the Afghan peace process, and said the Taliban should be pushed to cease violence, agree to ceasefire and face the fact that they cannot solve their problems militarily.
President Ashraf Ghani termed the terrorist groups a serious threat for the regional security and said hundreds of Afghan citizens have been killed and wounded since the US-Taliban deal was signed in February 29. He said the meaningless violence must be stopped immediately.
Attaching importance to the end of violence in Afghanistan, the president called on the regional and global countries to encourage the Taliban to embrace the Afghans and the international community’s call for ceasefire.
The president called the Talibans’ acts of violence illegitimate and said the government has provided the grounds for peace and plans to integrate the Taliban combatants. President Ashraf Ghani said a strong regional consensus is of paramount importance for Afghanistan and said SCO is of those platforms that can help in strengthening regional consensus for peace in Afghanistan.
