Afghans can build Afghanistan

Thursday June 6, 2013
Kabul (BNA): Holding national debates and understanding on national issues is important for removing mistrust and ensuring cooperation between the government and people, political commentator of BNA writes.
Reaching understanding over national issues is the strategy that the ministry for information and culture has been using to shorten the gap between the people and government.
In the second such national debate attended by pro-government and opponent experts including university professors, intellectuals, parliamentarians, political parties representatives and public opinion leaders wherein they discussed achieving peace after 2014, coming presidential elections and good governance.
Presenting their opinions, the participants in their remarks called for equipping national army, checking terrorist attacks, focusing on the sanctuaries of terrorists Afghanistan’s borders, removing distrust and ensuring national unity.
As the president has frequently said holding such conferences and roundtable meeting can help materialize the national objectives.
An expert to military affairs the retired general Atiqullah Omarkhil in his address noted that the western countries is deceiving Afghanistan with regard to equipping the national army.
Omarkhil was of the view that Afghanistan would face security threats at home and abroad unless the national security forces are adequately equipped, a concern has already made public by the president and officials with the national army.
Based on such concerns, in meetings of the National Security Council was decided to allocate 60 million US dollars for the repairing of armored vehicles of the country.
President Hamid Karzai has always stressed for getting rid of thinking dependency and called for building the country by Afghans themselves keeping in mind the country’s old civilizations and historical background which means that Afghanistan has never been dependent on foreign forces, an opinion that has been supported by the participants at the roundtable conference.
Not the NATO and the allied nations, rather it was the Afghans who have taken decisions with regards to their destination.
In his address at the national debate the minister for information and culture Dr. Sayed Makhdom Raheen said, “We have 3,000 years old history, and it was the Afghans not the foreigners that have guaranteed our survival throughout the history and would do the same in future”.
Holding such debates can help the government, political observers, experts and public opinion leaders to find common language.
