Kabul (BNA) President Hamid Karzai strongly condemned civilian killings in Kandahar and Helmand provinces.  According to the information provided by Helmand officials, a vehicle hit today afternoon by a roadside bomb in Marja district of Helmand province in which 8 passengers were killed.  In a separate incident, a suicide attack was carried out by a motorcyclist today in Shahre Naw area of Kandahar city, killing 1 civilian while wounding 3 others.  Denouncing terrorist attacks and bombings in the strongest possible terms, president Karzai labeled planting bombs on public routes and killing of innocent people, heinous acts carried out by enemies of the people of Afghanistan who do not want people to live in peace and security.  Deeply saddened by the tragic incidents, the president offered his deepest condolences and sympathies to the families of the victims and wished quick recovery for the wounded.

Helmand (BNA) NATO said that they arrested a local commander of armed Taliban in Helmand province today.  This commander has been arrested in combined operation of Afghan and NATO forces from vicinities of Nahri-Saraj district of Helmand province.  NATO press release said, the arrested commander of armed Taliban involved in several terrorist events on Afghan and NATO forces in Naharsaraj district of Lashkarga city.  This commander organized tens of terrorist events in Helmand province as well.  The release has not said any report about causalities of Afghan NATO forces and civilians. Taliban Commander Arrested in Kandahar

Kandahar (BNA) a local commander of armed Taliban was arrested by Afghan and NATO forces in Kandahar province today.  The identity of this commander has not disclosed; he was captured during in special operation of Afghan and NATO forces from vicinities of Dand district.  According to NATO press release to BNA, this armed Taliban commander involved in several terrorist attacks on Afghan and NATO forces in Kandahar province. Faryab (BNA)   a commander of Uzbekistan Islamic Party was detained by NATO in Faryab province today.  The identity of this commander has not clear; he has been detained in combined operation of Afghan and NATO in the outskirts of Sherintagab district of Faryab province.   According to NATO press release, this commander has been detained in special operation from his hideout.  This Uzbek Taliban commander was detained on charges of several terrorist events in the south-west of Afghanistan.  During arresting of this commander, numbers of other militias have been detained on charges of cooperation with terrorist group.  T. Kabul (BNA) Different aspects of Afghan poet Manuchehri Damaghani’s life were reviewed in a seminar held here in Kabul.  The seminar was held on Wednesday by Afghanistan academy of sciences with participation of a number of knowledgeable figures and researchers.  It was held in Shah Bobo Jan palace on the occasion of 1000th anniversary of a star in Persian literature.  Hamid Karzai, president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan in a message read out by head of the academy reminded of Ghazna, where Manuchehri Damaghani had spent his literal life, as a place of culture and said Ghazna will soon get the title of Islamic culture center.  Seminars held through the academy are effective for introduction of cultural figures of Ghazna.  Introduction of the Afghan poet’s thoughts of Ghazna has shown the culture of relers of Ghazna.  The message also said. “The current seminar was held on the occasion of 1000th death anniversary of Munichehri Damaghani.”  Literal researchers called him natural poet and said, “Manuchehri, also a natural, love and life poet, his poems are incomplete song.” Dr. Sayed Makhdom Rahin, minister of information and culture in his message read out by Jalal Noorani, advisor to ministry of information and culture said most researchers considered Ghazna’s empire was from Rai to Delhi, but a number of researchers considered that ulemas, knowledgeable figures, speakers of the time were related to the empire.  The message added if we wrote down names of the figures for literature, religion, astrology and architecture, we would get a long scroll.  In the message Dr. Rahin also said Manuchehri Damaghani, who also got title of master, was a poet whose poems are picturized in the mind of readers.  In the seminar a number of knowledgeable figures and writers read their articles related to life and character of the poet.  Abu Najem Ahmad Bin Quss Bin Ahmad Manuchehri was among those poets who lived 5th century of lunar year.

Herat (BNA) Local security officials in Herat say by cap- turning four armed individuals, a terrorist plot made for dismantling the New Year festival has been spoiled in the province.  According to reports, the armed terrorists planned to dismantle the festival by detonating bombs in the province.  Muhaiuddin Noori, a spokesman for Herat governor says the individuals admitted that they were commanded from other side of the border to launch terrorist attacks during the New Year festival in Herat province.  It is said light arms, roadside bombs and numerous explosives have been also seized.

Salang highway reopened

Kabul (BNA) Salangs highway has been reopened to traffic.  The highway had been closed to traffic on the threshold of the New Year due to heavy snowfalls, storm and avalanches.  General Mohammad Rajab, head of preservation and observation for Salangs said on Thursday, “As a result of efforts made by workers of the directorate of preservation and observation for Salangs and directorates of public work of the neighboring provinces were able to reopen the high way to traffic after 72 hours blockage.  Rajab added all vehicles including trucks were now able to cross the tunnel from morning to evening.  He once again asked all the drivers to follow all the directions of the relevant officials and equip their vehicles with necessary winter equipments.  While complaining of the relevant government institutions, General Rajab said based on the previous decision, they didn’t play any vital roles in providing facilities to passengers.

Kabul (BNA) Hamid Karzai, president of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has expressed deep sorrow over crash of a Turkish helicopter as a result of which 12 soldiers and two Afghan girls were killed.  According to Kabul police officials, a Turkish soldier’s helicopter operating in the framework of NATO forces in Afghanistan crashed yesterday morning in Haankhil village of Bagrami district of Kabul, resulting in killing all of its crew members and two Afghan girls in a residential house where the copter crashed.  President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan was deeply saddened over the incident.  The president offered condolences and sympathies to the Turkish victims’ families who are old and historic friends of Afghan people.  The president also offered condolences to the Afghan victims’ families and wished them patience and immediate recovery to the injured Afghan child.

Kabul (BNA) US defense Secretary, Leon Panetta in a meeting with his Afghan counterpart, Gen. Abdul Raheem Wardak assured that his country would support the Afghan security forces after 2014.  In a security discussion both sides focused over the ongoing condition of the country with the spokesman for the national defense ministry, Gen. Zahir Azimi to report full preparation for taking security of their own country by the end of 2013 before the International Chicago Conference.  He said the foreign forces would change their war support into defensive and make effort on training the forces beyond the deadline based the foreign forces would leave the country.  Strongly condemning the incident took place in the southern province of Kandahar in which 16 civilians including women and children had been killed, the US defense secretary said a responsible withdrawal of the international forces from Afghanistan was a need considering the security condition of the war torn country.  He said Afghan forces would be trained and equipped by a number of his troops inside Afghanistan, after the foreign forces phase out from the country by 2014.  According to the officials for the national ministry of defense, and annual contribution of up to $4.100 billion would be pledged for the Afghan security forces in the International Chicago Conference.

Kabul (BNA) Afghanistan’s Defense Minister, Gen. Abdul Raheem Wardak in a meeting with his German counterpart, Tomas Dimizi discussed the third round of security transition process in the country, an official said the other day.  He said the Afghan security forces had gotten forward with the process of security transition from the international forces as they could for the first and second round in some parts of the country.  In a meeting held in the defense ministry compound, he assured that the security transition process for the third round in which the provinces of Badakhshan, Jauzjan and Sar-e-Pul are included would also be run by them properly, but the national defense minister asked for training and equipment of the Afghan security forces as required.  Meanwhile, the German defense minister assured his Afghan counterpart on his country’s lasting cooperating with Afghanistan beyond 2014.
